Adjani Gama Dessavre
Today’s cake is about Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch. It’s a book written by Terry Pratcher and Neil Gaiman, and recently it was adapted to a TV series. But why should we talk about this creation specifically? You may wonder this, and you may answer: “Oh, it is probably because Adjani finds it wonderful”. Well, if that was your answer, you’re only partly correct. There is another important reason: this book describes a very particular apocalypse, and honestly, it looks a lot like our current reality.
I do not want to introduce too many spoilers, but I’ll say a couple of things: there exists a book with prophecies from a witch, and they’re true and accurate (and nice! Remember my words). It is wonderful because instead of saying something like “in 2030 people will travel on spaceships”, it describes the events foreseen by the witch as she can interpret them. For example, if a car appears, it would be described as a weird metal cart. Furthermore, the apocalypse is around the corner, and bizarre situations happen around the world because of a kid, who doesn’t really know about his real powers. Also, there’s an Angel and a Demon with quite a sense of humour. Unpredictable things happen all over the story. Sometimes the events seem random, yet everything is part of a perfect symphony. Also, it has one of my favourite jokes ever. Just remember me with the word “Dog”.
The book is a piece of art. The way these authors play with the language and with situations is merely fantastic. It has a unique sense of humour, and I strongly recommend reading it. However, if you are more into a TV series these days, go ahead, open Amazon Prime, and watch this one! The brilliant Michael Sheen and David Tennant have great chemistry and bring to life the Angel and the Demon from the story. The adaptation is one of the best ever made from a book in my opinion.
Now, let’s sum up this year. There was a big fire in Australia, then a pandemic, then a warning of a meteorite hitting the Earth, information about UFOs and aliens was released (no one really cared because reality was already too weird), and there was a lot of hail where I live. Oh!, I almost forgot, the hail was after the killer wasps. Also, we had a tornado in a city that has no tornadoes (though some people say this is an exaggeration. There have been a couple tornadoes in the past, apparently ¿?). Maybe the pandemic is making us focus our attention on these events, or maybe it is just a really bizarre and random year.
Whatever the reality is, it’s the perfect moment for Good Omens and a little of that kind of humour. Maybe laughing a bit will help us all cope with everything. Perhaps we will realise the Antichrist is coming. Oh, yeah, did I forget to say the kid in the story is the Antichrist? Hahaha, what the hell? Who knows? I love this story so much! So I invite you to enjoy it as much as I do. And PLEASE do not take things literally, except that part where I tell you this story is fabulous and that you should read it.
